“Merry Christmas” Polls Higher Than Obama, GOP Candidates and “Happy Holidays.”

In a development related to our discussion on the banning of sitting on the lap of Santa Claus comes news from Rasmussen Reports that 70% of American adults prefer the use of “Merry Christmas” to that of “Happy Holidays.”

The so called “War on Christmas” has been raging for years now. For some it is a rallying call against what is seen as the degradation of the Judea-Christian beliefs held by a majority of the founders and citizens of the United States.

So when businesses started to say “Happy Holidays” instead of the more traditional “Merry Christmas,” people were concerned.

They need not be.

The basic fact is that the spirit of Christmas lives within us. No one can take that out of us unless we let them. If a supervisor at work wants us to say “Happy Holidays” to be “all inclusive,” that is fine. As conservatives we should recognize the right of people to run their company as they see fit.

Away from the job, however, we can and should speak our hearts with love and respect. If someone says to us “Happy Holidays,” in a store or place of business, we should respond with the understanding that is what they have been directed to do.

A kind and cheerful “Merry Christmas!” says much about who we are.

Ultimately, Christmas is not about Santa Claus, reindeer, trees, lights, candy canes and all that. In the end, Christmas is about the kid born in the manger – our Savior.

It doesn’t matter that he wasn’t born on December 25th. It doesn’t matter that no wise men showed up that night. What matters is that He was born, lived and died for us.

If we are going to get angry whenever someone says “Happy Holidays,” what does that say about our beliefs? What does it say about the joy of the season and the joy year round that is to be found within us?

So the next time someone says “Happy Holidays!” to you, we recommend we all respond with a huge smile and say “Merry Christmas!”

After all, 70% of the people prefer it that way.
