Banning Christmas Cookies. “It’s For The Kids.”
The school district in Westford, Massachusetts has banned Christmas cookies in schools this year.
Students are being told to leave the Christmas cookies, cakes, candy bars, and soda at home and to bring fruits, unsweetened juices, popcorn and raisins instead.
Well, at least they are not banning them because “Christmas” might “offend” someone.
But the thought process behind the ban is just as offensive.
Superintendent Everett Olsen says the ban on holiday sweets has nothing to do with being politically correct, rather, his motive is simply promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“We aren’t trying to take the Christmas out of Christmas. We’re not trying to take the enjoyment out of children’s lives. We’re just trying to act responsible,” he told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Mike Macklin.
The problem is that simply banning something does not promote anything but a ban. It doesn’t teach a child why or why not to eat something. It is simply a ban.
Furthermore, eating Christmas cookies is not harmful. It never has been. Eating excessive amounts of Christmas cookies may be bad, but once again, that is a choice to be taught and not one that should be imposed upon everyone.
Lastly, why does a school board think they have the right to say a child cannot bring a legal gift into the school to give to others? This is not where kids are handing out bottles of Jack Daniels, bags of marijuana, or crack cocaine. These are Christmas cookies!
The making of Christmas cookies has always been a family activity. It is a time when families bake, decorate and share the fruits of their efforts with friend and loved ones.
But this ban is “for the kids,” according to the school district.
Here’s a newsflash for the school district: they aren’t your kids. They are the children of parents who send them to you each day to be educated, not indoctrinated.
Beside the fact the school district earns a gold ribbon in Grinch-i-ness, if we want our kids to take Christmas cookies to school and hand them out to their friends, the school board has no say whatsoever in the matter.
