Because Florida Has No Other Needs…..

Some legislator by the name of Wengay Newton (D – St. Petersburg) has decided that there is nothing else the Florida Legislature can fix or needs to address so he is proposing an “An act relating to motor vehicle theft,” known as HB 927.

You might think that this bill does something like increasing penalties for people who steal cars.

You might think that it increases liability to the thief for damages a stolen car does to the car and other object.

No, this bill makes it a crime for the owner of a car if they leave their keys in a car and it is stolen by a minor.

It is a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083, if a person violates subsection (1) by failing to lock the ignition of a motor vehicle in the required manner, and, as a result thereof, a minor commits the offense of theft of the motor vehicle.

This bill effectively makes the owner of a car a criminal if it is stolen by a minor.

Newton says that he is trying to cut down on the number of cars stolen by minors. That is a noble goal but let’s try this first: teach kids that stealing other people’s property is morally and legally wrong.

There is no way a person should be held responsible if someone else steals their car. We don’t care if the thief is a minor or not. Stealing is stealing and making the owner of the car responsible for the actions of others is beyond ridiculous and stupid.

Newton needs a lump of coal in his Christmas stocking for this boneheaded idea.
