Pizza Hut Delverymen Now Carry Guns. And Badges.

We give police a hard time around here sometimes when it is deserved, but this story is not about police behaving badly.

After a pizza hut delivery man was involved in an accident, two Portland police officers delivered the pizza to the couple who had ordered the pizza.

Ryan Rakos was delivering a pizza to Steve Huckins and his wife when he was involved in a vehicle accident in which he hurt his back and neck. The accident was unknown to the Huckins who called the PIzza Hut to say their pizza had not been delivered. The manager of the store said he would make another pizza and deliver it personally.

While the Huckins were chowing down on the second pizza, there was a knock at the door. Huckins opened the door to find two officers with the first pizza in hand, completing the delivery.

They turn around to leave, and I said, ‘whoa, whoa, whoa – I got to get a picture of this. No one is going to believe Portland police delivering a pizza.’ So that’s the picture everyone saw,” Huckins said.

Huckins said he sent the photo, which has gone viral, to Pete Simpson because he wanted to recognize the two officers, Michael Filbert and Royce Curtiss, for going out of their way to ensure he and his wife received their pizza.

“I wanted these officers to get a little recognition because these officers went above and beyond,” Huckins said.

This would be a great story but it gets even better.

The injured driver is throwing a pizza party for the officers of the precinct.

The Portland Police Bureau issued the flowing statement on the matter:

“The Bureau’s official position on community policing is that it’s important to invest time having positive interactions with the community. In this instance, taking a few minutes to deliver someone their dinner is a perfect example of what kind of officers we want in Portland – officers who care about those they serve.”

Now, [delivery driver Ryan] Rakos wants to return the favor and throw a pizza party for the entire East Precinct, according to Courtney Moscovic with Pizza Hut.

Moscovic said Rakos is currently recovering at home and has a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday. If he’s cleared by the doctor, he plans to return to work on Saturday and cater the party, Moscovic said.

According to Moscovic, Rakos wants to see the officers under happier conditions.

A very cool and nice story all around from everyone involved.
