When There Is A Vaccine, Who Gets It First? Biden Advisor: Not the US.

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel

For a part of the campaign, Joe Biden said that if the “scientists advised it,” he would shut down the country.

There is great debate as to whether Biden has the Constitutional authority to do so with most legal scholars coming down on the side that he did not. Still, it shows that Biden believes that he will allow “scientists” to drive the handling of the pandemic.

In an interview with ABC “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir, Biden said:

When Muir pressed whether he shut down the country if the scientists advised him to do so, Biden responded, “I would shut it down. I would listen to the scientists.

Biden’s response was met with great pushback which caused him to shift directions:

Why Masks Work BETTER Than You’d Think.

The math of masks.

This video is about how masks (whether surgical, or N95, or cloth) are counterintuitive and actually work much better epidemiologically than one might expect. Masks do double-duty, and the fraction of interactions with masks is much higher than the fraction of people wearing masks, so partially adopted, partially effective masks are able to reduce the basic reproduction number surprisingly well

This is somewhat fascinating when you watch it because it turns out there is more to the effectiveness of masks that you may think.

Why Americans Fear The COVID-19 Vaccine.

We were talking about this with one of our site ninjas yesterday.

The entire script of the video can be found here, but some of the highlights include:

Vaccines are the greatest health care advance of our time, preventing an estimated 4.5 billion infections since their advent. So what explains the reluctance of so many Americans to vaccinate?

It’s a combination of bad science, the government’s long history of misleading the public, and the collapse of confidence in public health authorities because of their catastrophic failures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There’s a bit of history behind this parody, and we’ll deal with that at the end of the video.

I’ve got more ice than Sweden
More Maker’s than Eden
More 12-year-old whites than Prince Andrew

A COVID-19 Post.

We haven’t done a post on COVID-19 in awhile, and we thought we’d update some things.

First, a large scale, phase three test of a vaccine is about start.

The biggest test yet of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine got underway Monday with the first of some 30,000 Americans rolling up their sleeves to receive shots created by the U.S. government as part of the all-out global race to stop the pandemic.

Final-stage testing of the vaccine, developed by the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc., began with volunteers at numerous sites around the U.S. given either a real dose or a dummy without being told which.

“I’m excited to be part of something like this. This is huge,” said Melissa Harting, a 36-year-old nurse who received an injection in Binghamton, New York. Especially with family members in front-line jobs that could expose them to the virus, she added, “doing our part to eradicate it is very important to me.”

Another company, Pfizer Inc., announced late Monday that it had started its own study of its vaccine candidate in the U.S. and elsewhere. That study also aimed to recruit 30,000 people.

Some People Are Scum.

There is no other way of putting this: Some people are scum and will use anything they can to scam people out of a few bucks.

The latest trick is that people are selling “Face Mask Exempt” cards which carry the seal of the Department of Justice saying that the bearer of the card is exempt from wearing faces masks and that requiring them to do so is a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Michigan Barber Has License Restored. ‘Bout Daggone Time.

You may remember the story of Karl Manke, a 77 year old barber in Owosso, Michigan who was the target of the wrath of the State of Michigan when he opened his barbershop because he was denied unemployment three times. Needing income, Manke became a symbol of people who felt the government, particularly that of Governor Whitmer in Michigan, was overstepping its bounds by quite a bit.

For example Whitmer’s orders to “prevent” the spread of COVID-19 included such ideas that people could go to WalMart to get food, but they could not go to the same store to get a grill on which to cook that food. People could go to a store to get parts for such things a plumbing repairs, but could not by paint to paint houses or rooms. People could not purchase seeds to grow food which, of course, would have reduced the number of trips to a grocery store to get food or at the very least reduced the purchases being made. Our favorite was that Michigan residents who had vacation homes in Northern Michigan could not travel to those homes but people from out of state could go to their vacation homes in the same area. (Unless, of course, you are the governor and her family. Then traveling to northern Michigan was okay.)

It was Manke who caught the national attention. Unlike people with money or whatever, Manke personified the blue collar worker whose business Whitmer had shut down, but offered him no alternative income.

Wanna Hook Up? Not In England You Can’t.

This comes from our friend William Teach over at the Pirate’s Cove.

In England, sex with someone outside your household is now illegal due to COVID-19.

Coronavirus: Sex during lockdown with someone outside your household is illegal from today

Having sex in your own home with someone from a different household is illegal from today, after the government altered its coronavirus legislation.

At 11.30am on Monday, a change to the law was introduced that bans two people from different households in England gathering in an indoor, private place during the coronavirus lockdown.

The amendment to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) Bill states: “No person may participate in a gathering which takes place in a public or private place indoors, and consists of two or more persons.”
